GRAND CANYON
When immigration attorney Mack (Kevin Kline) is stranded in a bad part of town, he is rescued from a gang of street thugs by tow truck driver Simon (Danny Glover); the two become good friends, and Mack tries to repay Simon by setting him up on a blind date with Jane (Alfre Woodard), a friend of his secretary Dee (Mary Louise Parker) — and by helping his sister (Tina Lifford) move to a better neighborhood. Meanwhile, Mack's best friend (Steve Martin), a blowhard producer of cheapie films, is wounded in a robbery; Mack's wife Claire (Mary McDonell) finds an abandoned baby and applies for adoption; and Simon's nephew (Patrick Malone) is thinking of joining a gang. As everybody's lives interweave, the "grand canyon" of class and race issues that would normally keep them apart is bridged.
