Synopsis:

When fast-talking reporter Toby Prentiss gets in trouble with his editor, he is relegated to writing the newspaper's advice column. Assuming the mantle of “Miss Lonelyhearts” and writing under duress, Prentiss purposely gives out ridiculous advice in the hopes he’ll get fired, but much to everyone’s surprise the column becomes more popular than ever. The paper’s circulation increases and while Prentiss pleads to be let off the job, the column’s newfound popularity prohibits it… so long as no one finds out “Miss Lonelyhearts” is really a man. After a local gangster learns Prentiss’ identity, he offers the writer a monthly bribe to promote a shady ‘house brand’ of pharmaceuticals in the column; Prentiss accepts, but when his mother dies as a result of taking the bogus medicine, he tries to get out of the deal.
