December marks the 40th anniversary of the much-loved sea thriller, Jaws.
Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley's 1974 novel, the film was a box-office smash hit, winning several awards for its soundtrack and editing. Forty years on and the film remains extremely popular, considered by many a classic of American cinema.
The tale takes place as a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island. Police Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, however Mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) fears that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Aided by Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Buddy Shaw), Chief Brody sets out to capture the killer beast, engaging in an epic battle of man vs. nature.
